Introduction

The path to world peace is much simpler than anyone has imagined. Peace on Earth could come down to one word: “worship” and a case of mistaken identity.

World peace has not been known since the Homo sapiens evolved on the planet and started their expansion across the globe.  Some other homos also evolved – such as the Homo Neanderthal – but the Homo sapiens (wise Homo) dominated the planet Earth.  Conflict often resulted from competition for natural resources or over territorial boundaries.  With the advent of ice ages and low sea levels, the Homo sapiens populated the globe.  Due to different climates, these Homo sapiens evolved to match their environment.  As populations grew and resources became scarce, wars of expansion dominated the globe for centuries.

There is a place in the Mediterranean known as the Fertile Crescent, where agriculture replaced the hunters and gathers and permanent communities and cities began to appear as the ice age receded.  As part of the evolution of man, worship was a key element in almost all of the societies on the planet.  Worship took on different forms, from sun worshipers to human sacrifices to the gods.

The Old Paradigm [i]

According to the history recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible, there was a transition to worshiping one God, the Creator of the Universe (CoU).  This one God guided his chosen group of Homo sapiens to a new way of life, hopefully as an example for others to follow.  This group of Homo sapiens was led though many successes and failures and established themselves as dominant in a new land in the Fertile Crescent.   The CoU gave them ten guidelines to follow that would make them successful in their possession of this new land.  These guidelines, if followed, would produce an economically efficient nation that would prove them superior to those who would dispossess them of this new land.  This new nation then made a new religion of these ten guidelines and they became an economically inefficient nation and were overrun by the neighboring nations.

The Arrival of the Messenger

The Romans made a significant advancement to civilization by constructing roads, which connected the communities they had conquered.   The three factors of agriculture, roads and a society that worshiped one God, the CoU, provided the only place on the planet that the representative of the creator of the universe (RoCoU), a.k.a. Jesus, could visit and have His message spread across the globe. [ii]

The New Paradigm

The old paradigm [iii] consisted of the ten guidelines, along with many man made laws to follow that became stricter as a fix for failures. As time progressed, more laws were made to bring their society into compliance with worshiping their one God.

The RoCoU brought in a new paradigm for the relationship with the CoU.  The major element of this new paradigm is the “Personal Counselor,” a.k.a. The Holy Spirit that He sent to us, after he had returned to his place in the universe, to guide us through life and teach us everything we needed to know.

The Derailment of the New Paradigm

Ironically, this society had evolved and formed a society that worshiped this one God, the CoU. When the RoCoU arrived with His message, He was crucified, then resurrected from the dead, and ascended into heaven (the universe), and then they also began worshiping this RoCoU. They totally missed the second guideline, given in Exodus 20:4 in the Old Testament Bible, as they had made idols of the CoU and the RoCoU.   “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below, You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to thousands who love me and keep my Commandments (guidelines).” (NIV)  The big problem with idols is that they become “sacred cows” and must be defended to the death of those worshiping these idols.

The followers (Apostles, Disciples) of this RoCoU, chosen to carry His message to the population of the Earth, were chosen due to their lack of expertise in the old paradigm, and thus were trainable without the need to deprogram their religious expertise (see accounts of Nicodemus’ conversation with the RoCoU in the New Testament Bible, John 3:1-13).  However, the twelve Apostles (Disciples), could not break away from the Old Paradigm to the exclusivity of the New Paradigm, but instead presented the RoCoU as a progression of the Old Paradigm, a case of mistaken identity.

Through the writing of the Gospel and commentaries in the New Testament of the Bible, most of the writers put their own perspective (spin) on the events of the time or used the events and evidence as an argument that the RoCoU was a completion of the promised savior that had been predicted in the Old Paradigm (Prophets can predict that a messenger will come, but they cannot predict the message of the messenger).   The results of this spin on the events and evidence of the time have been passed down through history are a hybrid of the Old Paradigm and the New Paradigm, in effect “a watered-down New Paradigm.” Only the writings of Mark, who wrote as an historian, and Luke, who wrote as a commissioned journalist, are free of the writer’s perspective. Mark evidently wrote hastily in anticipation of being caught up in the turmoil of the persecution of Christians in Rome.  Mark observed some of the protocols of journalism in recording in his journals, as in he answered who, what, and where of the events, but did not include the “why,” which was the spin that other writers put on the events and evidence.  Mark included the good, the bad, and the ugly, which is evidence of his unbiasedness.

The Nag Hammadi Scriptures

The Nag Hammadi Scriptures were found in 1945 outside the Egyptian community of Nag Hammadi not far from a monastery, buried as a time capsule, below the nearby cliffs. These Scriptures (inspired, revered spiritual writings) were discovered by Muhammad Ali, a gather of bird fertilizer beneath the cliffs.  In the time period of the late third century, huge changes occurred in the Christian community. “Irenaeus of Lyon, who wrote around 160 CE, had discussed –and denounced—passages from the Secret Book of John, discovered complete at Nag Hammadi” “Athanasius, the archbishop of Alexandria, who sent out an Easter letter all over Egypt in the spring of 367, ordering believers to reject what he called “illegitimate and secret books.” He included a list of twenty-seven books of which he approved, calling them the ‘springs of salvation.’“ [iv] These are the same twenty-seven books that constitute the New Testament Bible! Scholars think that possibly “The Gospel of Thomas” and the “Gospel of Mary” are the most important and earliest records of the teachings of Jesus, possibly from the middle of the first and the second centuries.[v]  “The Gospel of Thomas” is a list of sayings of Jesus. “The Gospel of Mary (not contained in the Nag Hammadi codices) was probably ascribed to Mary Mandala; it does not seem possible a Jewish author for this gospel.  The ascription may point instead to an early Christian group that appealed to her for apostolic authority, much as other communities in the second century were appealing to Paul, Peter, Thomas, or other apostles to authorize their teaching.” [vi]

At the end of the third century, the libraries of Alexandria and Antioch were destroyed by fire.  Books not on the list put out by Athanasius were disappearing.  The monks at the monastery near the cliffs outside Nag Hammadi could very well be the ones who put these codices in a sealed vase and buried them below the cliffs outside of Nag Hammadi.

The Gospel writers Luke and Matthew apparently referenced document(s) that are referred to as “Q.”  “The Gospel of Thomas” could very well be this document “Q,” or one of the documents in “Q.” They also could have referenced the wittings of Mark. In any case, the Council of Trent canonized the twenty-seven books identified by Athanasius, the archbishop of Alexandria in the mid 1500 CE.

The End Times

The end times were predicted not only by the RoCoU, but by the Apostle John in the book of Revelation.  The RoCoU described the end times as coming like a bolt of lightning. [vii]  John described the end times as a conquering of the Earth with the truth and a new Earth would be born. [viii]

Cosmologists describe the end times as the sun exhausting its supply of hydrogen that is consumed by its nuclear fusion reaction.  This reaction provides an equilibrium force against the force of gravity.  One of two actions follow this burnout: 1) the sun will collapse under the force of gravity into what is known as a black hole; 2) as the sun is collapsing it will rebound into a supernova.  The forces from this supernova will be so violent, that the helium and other metals and compounds will be dissociated into their elements (helium back to hydrogen, etc.), providing the elements that will be attracted by gravity and form new suns and new planets.  The creation process will begin anew and the universe will continue to expand. [ix]

What will become of planet Earth is up to speculation.  One possibility is that Jupiter, a large gas planet of mostly hydrogen, will attract these new free hydrogen molecules through the force of gravity and a nuclear fusion reaction will be ignited, turning Jupiter into a new sun.  This idea is totally speculative, and open to anyone’s imagination.

The Apostle John, in his book of Revelation, thinks a new Earth will be born and a New Jerusalem with all of the latest in trimmings, will descend from the heavens and life on this new Earth, for those who were judged according to what they had done and whose names are in the Book of Life, will have no more death or mourning or crying or pain. [x]

The book of Revelation is best understood when understanding that symbolism was used to convey more information than could be conveyed by words. [xi]  Viewing this New Jerusalem as a symbol for the New Earth, could give us a view of the New Earth.

Conclusion

  • To repeat: the major focus of the new Paradigm is the “Personal Counselor”, a.k.a. The Holy Spirit that was sent to us by the RoCoU to guide us through life and teach us everything we need to know. [xii] This is the New Paradigm shift and is exclusive of the Old Paradigm, and not a progression of the Old Paradigm. Thus, the path to world peace is this simple: just listen for this counselor and He will find you, guide you and teach you.
  • Do not make yourself an idol and worship your idol: not God, Jesus, Allah, Mohamed, Buddha, Confucius; the cross, the Star of David, the Bible, the New Testament, the Quran, or any written works. Anything that will take control of your decision-making, such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs of all kinds, etc. become idols, and addictions become sacred cows and sacred cows need to be defended at all costs until death! Therefore, The Path to World Peace is to eliminate all worship for it is worship that creates sacred cows and causes differences that must be defended. Worship is an artifact of ancient man.  Stay in control of your life by listening to the Personal Counselor that the RoCoU sent to you.

Q.E.D.

Generally speaking, the errors in religion are dangerous; those in philosophy only ridiculous.” David Hume (7 May 1711 – 25 August 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, known especially for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment.

A Caveat

Most all of the animal life on earth is in a predator-prey relationship, e.g. everything in the jungle is food for everything in the jungle.  Predator-prey relationships keep the population of both within the available food supply.  The Homo sapiens do not have a natural predator to regulate their population within the boundaries of their food supply. There is or were pandemics that reduced the population of Homo sapiens in great numbers, but we have conquered most of these population regulating devices. Given that populations will increase to the limit of the supply of resources, to maintain the balance of supply and demand of resources, more antibiotic resistant viruses will be present in the future causing pandemics. Combined with wars to reduce the populations of the world, it is probable these two events will continue.

Q.E.D.

[i] “A paradigm shift (also radical theory change) a concept identified by the American physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn (1922–1996), is a fundamental change in the basic concepts and experimental practices of a scientific discipline. Kuhn contrasted these shifts, which characterize a scientific revolution, to the activity of normal science, which he described as scientific work done within a prevailing framework (or paradigm). In this context, the word “paradigm” is used in its original Greek meaning, as ‘example’.”

A Paradigm in the Social Sense:

“In Kuhn’s view, the existence of a single reigning paradigm is characteristic of the natural sciences, while philosophy and much of social science were characterized by a “tradition of claims, counterclaims, and debates over fundamentals.” Others have applied Kuhn’s concept of paradigm shift to the social sciences” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradigm_shift/)

Addendum

In the Gospel of Mary, the Savior (RoCoU) taught, in the end time, that matter would return to its origin.  Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is supportive of this process.  Energy (E) and matter (M) are related to the speed of light (C) in E=MC2.  Energy and matter are interchangeable; energy becomes matter and matter becomes energy.  As a particle of matter is accelerated close to the speed of light, the particle increases in mass and losses energy thus the particle slows down.  Light from the sun is corpuscular and travels as a wave. When the sun’s rays impinge on matter on Earth, the corpuscular matter is converted into energy, giving life to everything on Earth in one form or another.

The RoCoU

The RoCoU came to Earth, seen as just a speck of dust on the viewer’s screen from the camera on a Space Probe as it was leaving our Solar System, as a seed implanted into a virgin named Mary.  He grew up in this special group of Homo sapiens who recognized one God and became a teacher.  He selected a small group of members of this society (Apostles) and taught them how to live life on this planet Earth and how to communicate with the CoU to get all their material needs met.  He asked these Apostles to carry His message to the rest of the world.  His mission accomplished, he must now return to His home in the universe.  Therefore, He must change His form into a form compatible with travel through the universe, as He cannot do this in human form, He must die and resurrect in a new form capable to travel faster than the speed of light to His home in the universe.

For many years after the airplane was invented and outfitted with jet engines and rockets the popular thought was that the sound barrier could not be broken.  An airplane or rocket could not travel faster than the speed of sound.  On October 14, 1947, Charles Edward (Chuck) Yeager, a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, broke the sound barrier (Mach 1) in a Bell X-1, a rocket powered aircraft.  Could the same thing be true of the speed of light?  Can the barrier of the speed of light be broken by material converting to energy?  This is certainly food for thought for future generations.

The Bullies

The Bullies ver. 2.0.2

Introduction

Bullies come in different shapes and sizes and from different families of origin, with and without siblings.   There are three basic types of bullies: physical bullies, verbal bullies and in-your-face bullies.  There are several well-known tactics to deal with these bullies.  These bullies think that their behavior is normal, as many have no doubt learned to be a bully by the time they were six years old. [i]

Physical Bullies

Physical bullies are those children or young adults you meet on the way to school.  This was prevalent at least during the days when we allowed our children to walk to school – a rare occasion in today’s world – as some of these physical bullies were allowed to grow up without correction or, in other circumstances, in unsupervised areas or even from supervision itself!  The standard format to take care of these young bullies was to show them that you would not be bullied.

Case Study I

This writer was serving our country in support of LBJ’s War in Vietnam, and was living in a barracks known as “chicken coops,” as the barracks were screened in from top to bottom, with a wall in between.  They remained this way all year round.  Between two chicken coops was the latrine with showers.  One evening I was walking from the latrine dressed only in my shorts and wearing thongs.  Two young men approached me at the entrance.  One of them said to the other, “Watch this for how to start a fight.”  I was standing as in parade rest with my hands free.  I have seen this approach before in a scene from the film, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” where Butch Cassidy, played by Paul Newman, approached one of his underlings who was challenging his authority.  Butch let him have it with a kick to his manhood.  As this young man came at me intending to do the same, unaware of my fast reflexes, I sidestepped his kick and got my right arm under his right arm, thrust it upwards and came down with an elbow to his kidney zone.  He ended up sprawled out next to the water cooler. I kicked off my thongs and took up the karate ready-to-fight position. His buddy said something to him to call him off and he said, “We’re done.”  I put my thongs back on and returned to my bunk never to see this young man again.

 Case Study II

My son reported that a physical bully was making it difficult for him to get to his grade school, which was no more than a walk of four blocks. At this time, I had physical custody of my son and also had two roommates who were brothers. Both of these brothers held black belts in karate.  I asked one of these brothers to teach my son enough karate to take care of this bully that was making it difficult for him to walk to school.  After several sessions with this black belt karate instructor, my son made his karate knowledge known to this physical bully.  He never had a problem walking to school after this one exhibition.

Case Study III

In high school a lastborn in his family (another birth-order to find bullies) would see me coming down the hallway carrying a stack of books in front of me.  He took advantage of this situation and slapped the books out of my hands to the floor!  On another occasion when we were taking an unsupervised exam, I passed in front of him with my paper in my hand.  He again slapped my paper to the floor.  I reached down with my left hand and picked up the paper.  With my right hand I backhanded him and knocked him to the floor.  He got up and attacked me with both his fists flying.  Having performed research into boxing myself, I deflected all of his attempts to land a punch until we hear the supervising teacher returning. Later when I was in the gym putting on my basketball shoes, he approached me and apologized for his behavior.

Although the Representative of the Creator, a.k.a. Jesus, taught us to turn the other cheek when hit, he was encompassed in an authoritarian society and to return a punch would certainly result in death.  In this situation it is better to turn the other cheek and show them that you can take their bullying.

Verbal Bullies

There are four categories of verbal bullies. The first category includes those that grow up with a same-sex sibling within a couple of years of their age.  If they grew up bullying this younger sibling, then that personality trait would likely have become dominate by the time they were six years old. [ii]  If they had grown up with more knowledgeable parents, (authoritative rather than authoritarian)[iii]  they may have grown up looking after their younger sibling. But in any case, they certainly would have been more assertive than their younger sibling. In the workforce these will be the “take charge” people and they will want the work done “their way.”   The second category includes those that grow up being mostly exposed to older adults such as the only child or a distant lastborn child.  There are two categories of only children: the pure only child and the functional only child. Functional only children grew up as only children for various reasons (e.g. separation of family of origin, death of a sibling, more than six years between them and the next same sex sibling).[iv] Several of our U.S. presidents fall into the category of functional only children (Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Herbert Hoover, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama). [v] Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Russian president, is an example of a true only child. Even the little prince or princess that gets treated as special can develop this “only child syndrome.” For example, Joseph in the Old Testament was treated as special and even given a special coat to wear; he was sold off as a slave by his siblings but ended up the second in command in Egypt.  3) The third category includes those that demonstrate verbal attacking rants (VARs) often right in your face.  The origin of this behavior is varied; sometimes it is an inherited trait or it could be the result of a medical surgery procedure.  4) The fourth category is the highly educated bully (I know more than you bully).  These are probably the most difficult bullies to deal with as they are probably also either a firstborn or only child or a younger sibling following their role model older sibling.

The older sibling, with a near younger same-sex sibling, that turned out to be a bully will have a communication style of “I win, you lose.”  The only child often possesses a communication style of “in your face” or “I want this” or I want that.” The “I” word will come up often, as in “look what I have accomplished,”  “Look what I did,” etc.  A functional only child may even be made to feel more important if they experienced the death of a sibling that was close in age to them, as they may now have been treated as extra special by their parents and were given anything they wanted and more. A characterization of the only child syndrome by my late sister with an only child son-in-law was, “They are good people, and they just need to be mellowed a bit.” This was also characterized by my niece as, “It’s my way or the highway.” According to Dr. Kevin Leman, “They know they are right, even when they are not.” [vi] And in Dr. Leman’s “The Birth Order Book,” he writes, “Show me a young person that prefers to be around older people than people their own age, and I will show you an only child.”[vii]

Case Study IV

A few decades ago, I was being introduced to my new research partner; she was being introduced to me by the lead program manager in my laboratory.  She was going to design the experiments and I was going to perform the experiments. The first words from her were, “I want this over there and I want that over here.”  She gave these orders in such a strong manner that she blew me off my chair!  I picked myself up and stated, “I don’t want that over there and I don’t want this over here. I want that over there and I want this over here!”  She looked at the program manager with an open mouth.  The program manager stated, “See, he can do that too.”

This was not an unusual confrontation at this national employer, as there was a filter on the front door that only allowed “The Best of the Best” to enter though these doors.  With that type of filter on the front door in an academically-minded institution, the ones who meet these qualities will most likely be the firstborn in their family of origin or an only child, as these are the typical academic achievers. [viii]  Therefore, this institution had continuous contracts with professional communication instructors, and when it was needed, we got sent to rehabilitation to produce teamwork communication, a.k.a., assertive win-win communication skills.

This young lady, who graduated at the top of her class at MIT and was the only child of two PhD’s, certainly met the requirements to be the best of the best to enter through the front door.  I myself had been pulled aside by my manager of the time and told to “lighten up.” I received my invitation to attend these special teamwork communication classes. I, too, had graduated at the top of my college graduating class and both of my parents were college graduates and my father was a doctor of veterinary medicine. For my generation, I represented less than three percent of the US population in the families of origin.

Although I was the youngest of eight and my father was fifty-one years old and my mother thirty-nine years old when I was born, I still qualified as a functional only child. Like many first generation middle class parents, they had more children than they could send to college.  When I was still on my tricycle, three of my sisters came home from out-of-state college to hear that their college funding was being terminated and that it was more important for males to go to college than females, who in those days’ women went to college to marry a college man.  In my last semester in high school, my father died and it was determined by my five sisters that I was too stupid to go to college.

Good things often result from not-so-good circumstances.  I ended up in the U.S. Air Force in LBJ’s War in South Vietnam.  My sergeant recognized that I had natural troubleshooting abilities as a jet engine mechanic on the flight line, which was something I would never have recognized myself.  After my tour of active duty ended, I enrolled in a technical college. My Physical Metallurgy professor employed me to help him with a research project one summer.  I brought his project to a successful conclusion; He thought I was the most advanced student to ever come through that college.  When brought on staff at this national research institution, I brought several programs that were in trouble across the finish line successfully. When this young lady from MIT and I joined a special task force to troubleshoot a major issue for the Department of Defense, where she was made taskforce leader, and I was the troubleshooter, we worked well as a team. When I got my insight to the cause of the problem and put this insight up to the program leader, another experimental group verified the information and the task-force was disbanded.  When this young lady from MIT and now Stanford with a Master’s degree left this institution to do more domestic projects, she identified me as the “nation’s secret weapon,” and I accepted this status as “The Top Gun National Crises Troubleshooter.

The Importance of having Professional Communicators on Contract

This case study is presented to show how valuable professional interpersonal communication instructors are to an organization.  This writer has noticed that some interpersonal communication seminars in churches tend to lean on theology or philosophy to teach interpersonal communications.  Some colleges teach communications classes as a class in human resources, where the focus is on “The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator,” (MBTI) where one can find out their strengths to succeed in a profession and what personalities make up an effective team. In fact, MBTI was first formulated to place women in the workforce effectively during World War II. It now finds wide use in many areas.  Dr. Kevin Leman is internationally known as the guru of Adlerian Psychology that focuses on birth order in the family of origin and the skill packages that are developed from this learned environmental knowledge.   Instructors like Manuel J. Smith, Ph.D. promote hands-on techniques to be used during a conversation. He states, “It is not how you became what you are that’s important, but what works.”  His techniques of what works with bullies and manipulators include: “Broken Record,” “Fogging,” “Free Information,” “Negative Assertion,” “Negative Inquiry,” “Self-Disclosure,” and “Workable Compromise.”[ix]

Interpersonal Communication Techniques Explained [x]

Broken Record: A skill, by calm repetition – saying what you want over and over again – teaches persistence without you having to rehearse arguments or angry feelings beforehand, in order to be ‘up’ for dealing with others.

Effect: Allows you to feel comfortable in ignoring manipulative verbal side traps, argumentative baiting, irrelevant logic, while sticking to your desired point.

Fogging: A skill that teaches acceptance of manipulative criticism by calmly acknowledging to your critic the probability that there may be some truth in what he says, yet allows you to remain your own judge of what you do.

Example: That’s true. I …”

Effect: Allows you to receive criticism comfortably without becoming anxious or defensive, while giving no reward to those using manipulative criticism.

Free Information: A skill that teaches the recognition of simple cues given by a social partner in everyday conversation to indicate what is interesting or important to that person.

Effect: Allows you to feel less shy in entering into conversation while at the same time prompting social partners to talk more easily about themselves.

Negative Assertion: A skill that teaches acceptance of your errors and faults (without having to apologize) by strongly and sympathetically agreeing with hostile or constructive criticism of your negative qualities.

Effect: Allows you to look more comfortably at negatives in your own behavior or personality without feeling defensive and anxious, resorting to denial of real error, while at the same time reducing our critic’s anger or hostility.

Example: “You didn’t do too well in (criticism).” “You’re right. I wasn’t too smart in the way I handled that, was I?” “That was a dumb thing for me to do.” Use this technique in non-legal matters ONLY!

Negative Inquiry: A skill that teaches the active prompting of criticism in order to use the information (if helpful) or exhaust it (if manipulative), while prompting your critic to be more assertive and less dependent on manipulative ploys.

Effect: Allows you more comfortably to seek out criticism about yourself in close relationships while prompting the other person to express honest negative feelings and improve communication.

Example: “What was it about … that is wrong?”  “What was it that I … that was wrong?”

Self-Disclosure: A skill that teaches the acceptance and initiation of discussion of both the positive and negative aspects of your personality, behavior, lifestyle intelligence, to enhance social communication and reduce manipulation.

Effect: Allows you comfortably to disclose aspects of yourself and your life that previously caused feelings of ignorance, anxiety, or guilt.”

Example: “I like …” or “I don’t like …”, etc.

Workable compromise: In using your verbal assertive skills, it is practical, whenever you feel that your self-respect is not in question, to offer a workable compromise to the other person.  You can always bargain for your material goals unless the compromise affects your personal feelings of self-respect.  If the end goal involves a matter of your self-worth, however, there can be no compromise.

The Bully Solution

The solution to the physical bully has not changed over the centuries, although the Representative of the Creator of the Universe, a.k.a. Jesus, said to turn the other cheek. The standard action for a physical bully is to let them know that you are not going to be bullied (an option more applicable in a “Free Society”). The bully probably does not even know that they are a bully as they have been this way all of their lives. For them, this is normal; they just need a notification of being a bully.

There are a few solutions to a verbal bully. If it is attacking criticism or rebuttal, this can be neutralized and made beneficial by a technique call “fogging.” [xi]  Fogging is built on the metaphor that receiving criticism is like a stone that is thrown at a brick wall. The stone will rebound and the criticizer can pick the stone up again and throw it at the target.  However, if the target acts like a fog bank, the stone disappears harmlessly into the fog and defenses are mitigated.

The Rants

The assertive stance is a way of allowing their rant to continue unhindered.  This technique is useful for the in-your-face rants.  The assertive stance is feet spread at shoulder width, hands clasped behind the back and head and eyes straight ahead (the “Parade Rest” position). This allows the target of the rant to avoid getting involved with the rant.  For those who have formed a habit of rants, especially if it is over a phone, a more active tactic is required in response.  In this case, the target simply addresses the rants at the same time as they are coming until the rant ceases.  Then a question can be put forward such as “Now what did you want to talk about?”

Case Study V

It has been observed in females younger than middle aged that may have had the major female surgery to remove their reproductive system tend to exhibit this in-your-face rant (rights to privacy prevent confirming this data). I first noticed this rant behavior within a week of my wife’s major surgery.  Not only face to face or nose to nose, but over the telephone as well.  I once received one of these calls while in the kitchen with two of my housemates.  I held the phone out at arm’s length.  Both of my housemates agreed that no one should have to listen to this.  After about ten years of these phone calls, I received one while in my lab at work.  One of my coworkers suggested, after a similar incident involving a “Type A” project leader (people who are known to “unload on someone”), to give it back to them as it is being dished out.  On this occasion I tried out this suggestion with my now ex-wife and fed information back as fast as I was receiving this attacking rant.  She finally stopped the rant and I asked, “What was it that you wanted to talk about?” I took the position that one cannot go out and find a new mother for their children, and the situation had to be handled the best that it could be handled.

On the wife’s first exploratory visit to the surgeon, he told her that a number of women who had this operation ended up divorced.  When she brought this information home we both agreed that divorce was not an issue about which  we needed to be concerned.  Within six months of this major surgery, she filed for a divorce.  Now, decades later, our son is functioning as her significant other, as it seems that this is the only relationship she is able to maintain with her tendency to go into the attacking rant mode.  I have also met some young, middle aged, sons who seem to be functioning as their mother’s significant other.  How wide spread is this phenomenon?

Case Study VI

I was on a troubleshooting assignment at a manufacturing plant on the east coast, trying to solve the production problems with a state-of-the-art high field superconductor.  This was not a large facility and the offices were adjacent to the production line.  They had what they called their “meter-high quality control officer.” She actually was about a meter (three feet) tall.  It didn’t seem to matter what one said to her to put her into attacking rant mode.  My office was nearest the production line and I could hear the general manager trying to calm her down in a distant closed office.  He was receiving what can only be considered as extreme abuse from this meter-high QC officer.  It took about a year and a half to solve the production problems and bring this project to a successful conclusion.  On returning back to the west coast, this general manager, who was a personal friend of our program manager (both were Englishmen in the same vocation), visited us in California. He had been dismissed as the general manager and he had come to realize that his brain had been significantly abused and that he was no longer able to make good executive decisions, bringing to the point that one must either control these verbal abusers or face serious brain damage from their attacking rants.

Sexual Assault by a Bully

In the present age, we are seeing more reports of sexual misconduct by bullies.  It is not surprising to see some of these men, who have employment power over women and are not physically or mentally attractive to women, ending up using their employment power to sexually abuse their subordinates.  This abuse may have its origin in an over-controlled society. Brothels have been in use for centuries to meet the needs of men and women who otherwise could not find a sexual partner.  Brothels that are well-regulated by health authorities are still functioning in parts of the U.S.  Regulated brothels would reduce or eliminate underage prostitution, rape, assaults against women and human trafficking.  Brothels offered up as a career option instead of a vice would certainly be going against the grain in a religiously controlled society. Both options of career or vice have their positives and negatives.

Reflective or Active Listening

Reflective or active listening serves a couple of purposes.  1) The target summarizes or paraphrases what the verbal bully is saying and confirms their complaint or position.  2) The target is given time to think of their response.  This technique is something like counting to ten before returning the punch!  3) If the verbal bully is attacking with a question, repeat or rephrase the question, and then answer the question.  This technique also allows the target time to think before responding. This technique is sometimes used by politicians, only they may even go so far as to change the question to one they can answer!  Q.E.D.

The Presidential Election of 2016 is over and a new president has been elected.  Fortunately for the nation it was not another “Firstborn President”, whom have the reputation of getting the nation involved in wars and conflicts of all kinds with their “Must Win” attitudes.  Check the data yourself on “Birth-Order, Presidents and Wars” on the internet. [i]  You will also find in this data that “Middleborn Presidents” have gotten the nation out of more wars and conflicts than any of the other “Birth-Order Presidents” .  Some of these recent “middle-born presidents” were D. Eisenhower, R. Nixon, J. F. Kennedy, R. Reagan and G.H.W. Bush.

But you may have inadvertently found a new way to elect our president!  Your vocal and public negative opinion of the leader of Russia may have inspired them to work against you in this election through  negative propaganda against your presidency!  The old saw that “People who live in glass houses should not throw rocks”, applies.   It appears that anyone with a vote wants something for their vote.  You promised more government entitlements for votes and citizens seem to want more government entitlements, so you got their votes.  Before we, as a nation, empowered all the citizens with a vote for the president, this assignment was to the state legislatures, thus “The Electoral College”.   But the state legislatures also wanted something for their votes!  Now with your help we have international leaders casting their vote for our president and I suppose they want something for their votes!  Could it be they have chosen the person that they want to negotiate terms of agreements with?

True “Middleborn Children” grow up in the precarious position between two same sex siblings and must learn how to negotiate for their “Space”.  [ii]  We now have a “Middleborn President” and we are moving forward in a negotiating manner.  In the 90’s I sent you kudos for your example of “Keeping the family fortune intact”, the wives responsibility [iii].  A job well done.  Now as General Patton stated on his way to the Battle of the Bulge, “We are moving forward, either help or get out of the way”.

Justice and the Jury System

Justice and the Jury System ver. 1.0.2

Introduction

The key to preventing a “Hung Jury” is to vote “Undecided” when the Jury wants a quick vote without examining the evidence and recreating the scenario of interest. A “Not Guilty” or “Guilty” Vote before this in-depth examination of the scenario of interest could very well result in a “Hung Jury”.  When it’s “Guilty” against the “Not Guilty”; I’m right you’re wrong, this discussion can the result in a “Hung Jury”.  It is best to continue with discussions with votes of “Undecided” until a consensus is attained.

In the movie “Twelve Angry Men” the undecided voter, Henry Fonda, voted “Not Guilty” when what he actually wanted was a discussion of the evidence and the scenario of interest.  By voting “Not Guilty” this could have ended up as a “Hung Jury”.  But this writer thinks broadcasting this movie is a good idea, it could help future Juries.

Case Study

This writer was on a jury in 1997; it was a week-long affair with several idiosyncrasies.  In essence a young male, early twenty, a recent immigrant from one of the war-torn countries where the US had been involved in a major conflict in South East Asia. There were two ethnic “Gangs” in close proximity; South East Asian and Hispanic.

On this occasion a minor of Hispanic origin bought a six pack of beer and went to the nearby lake and consumed an unknown quality of the beer.  He may have had a companion, he may have stashed the leftover beer or he may have consumed the six-pack by himself.  No toxicology report was offered or asked for by the Jury.

In short, the South East Asian Gang (SEAG), who had been playing basketball in a nearby outdoor court, had an altercation with this young, intoxicated Hispanic male on his way home from the lake. At some distance from the SEAG this young man flashed his “Walkman” to the SEAG to make them think he had a gun.

He must have been successful as the SEAG returned to their homes and armed themselves for a Rumble.  The SEAG returned to the neighborhood of the Hispanics.  The young Hispanic with friends went to his home, walking in front of his father, who was consumed with watching daytime TV, and armed themselves with the stash of Fighting Knives (LARGE Double bladed, illegal knives) that the young Hispanic kept in his bedroom.   They passed by in front of his father, watching TV, and proceeded to confront the SEAG at the nearby corner.

The Hispanic Gang (HG) approached the SEAG with open fighting knives hidden behind their backs.  The scene quickly turned into hand to hand combat.  The young Hispanic was chasing the early twenties new immigrant with his large Butterfly Knife. The new immigrant pulled his gun from his waistband and fired about three rounds behind him as he was running.  Evidently the first round hit the young Hispanic in the heart and he was dead before he hit the ground.  The new immigrant tossed the gun in the estuary.

The DA had charged the new immigrant with Murder I, lesser charges were made available to the Jury: Murder II, Man Slaughter or Unintentional Manslaughter. The Judge ruled that the defendant was in possession of an illegal fire arm, no concealed weapon permit, and therefore could not plead “Self-Defense”.

By Friday afternoon the Jury was released to the Jury Room.  A Foreman of the Jury was selected and a blind vote was asked of the members of the Jury.  The count was eleven “Guilty” and one “Undecided”.  Jurors made arguments for their vote. A few more blind votes were taken with the same results (11-1).  The undecided voter was asked to disclose their identity, this writer did.  More arguments took place and more calls for a vote were taken.

One of the female Jurors (Teacher), familiar with this writer’s status at a local institution and therefore was like all the other people she had experienced from this institution to which she had a negative opinion.  In fact previously in the Jury Room she spoke negatively about this writer reading a physics book on acoustic guitars. After that altercation this writer started reading Plato’s “Republic”.  She now accused this writer of being prejudiced in favor of the defendant and he should be removed from the Jury Panel.

During the initial interviews, with the DA and defending counsel, of the Jurors this writer had to confess that he was once a gang leader during his high school days; it was the fad of the time (Westside Story).  The DA asked this writer if he was a minor and he confirmed that he was at this time.  The DA asked him what we did after high school and he told him that most of us joined a larger gang and we had a rumble with another large gang. The DA asked this writer for the names of these gangs and he stated the US Army, US Marines and he had joined the US Air Force.  His assignment was to send in helicopters and aluminum caskets into South Vietnam and send the fallen back to their families for burial.  This Teacher only heard the gang part, of this interview, as the defendant was also identified as a gang leader.

Gangs are a whole new subject to cover, mostly misunderstood by the general public.  From a scientific perspective there is a basic human need to belong to a small group that functions as a family.  When these young people find themselves without family, they choose to form these artificial families.  The causes of their loss of family are numerous and include dysfunctional families (alcoholic, drug addicted or absent fathers), new immigrants from foreign countries often form ethnic specific gangs.  These gangs are not necessarily a negative social group that is going to exhibit violent behavior although their natural instincts are to protect their home territory.  This behavior is common among many mammals of the world.

The Chairman of the Jury asked this writer what he had to say about these charges of being prejudiced, he stated that he didn’t think he was the one with a problem.  The rest of the Jury Panel backed him up on this and this Teacher was now pleading with the Jury to not remover her form the Jury and that she would no longer be prejudiced and would go along with what the Jury had decided.  This made the Jury dysfunctional as this non-proactive stance meant that in function the Jury now had only eleven voting members.  However, it was late on a Friday afternoon and nobody wanted to have to come back on Monday to finish up this public service.   This Jury decided to proceed to a consensus vote.

One of the Jury (twelve college graduates some with much training in making expeditious decisions), asked this writer to take the floor and lead them through his view of the scenario that had taken place. As he progressed to reconstruct the events that led up to this tragedy, others joined in with their observations as well. When he had finished we discussed our options and had verbally agreed to the charge of “Unintentional Manslaughter”.  A Vote was taken and this charge was unanimous.  Maybe because it was late on a Friday afternoon and nobody wanted to come back on Monday, they had a living to make and were not being compensated for Jury duty (not much), except for this writer and maybe a few others, and this was the least offensive charge that could be found for this defendant, which given the extenuating circumstances, was appropriate for this defendant.

The Jury assembled in the court room and the Foreman of the Jury reported the verdict.  The defending attorney was heard say to the defendant that he had been given a gift. Some members of the Jury met with the family of the young Hispanic boy and they felt like we did our duty in convicting the person who took their son’s life.

Who or Whom is really the Guilty Parties

But who or whom are really the guilty parties to this tragedy?  Is it the one who sold a six-pack of beer to this under age young man? Is it the father who was more interested in watching daytime TV than supervising his minor aged son and knowing that his son was hiding an arsenal of fighting knives in his bedroom?  Could it be our Immigration Department and their lack of indoctrination of the laws of our society to these new immigrates?  Could it be the lack of training of Jurors to conduct these meeting and arrive at a just verdict?  It is this writer’s opinion that there are many people and institutions responsible for these tragic events.

A Quick Solution

One Band-Aid approach would be to strengthen our parole boards with knowledgeable, unprejudiced members who are compensated sufficiently for them to take as much time as necessary to see that Justices is the result of our Justice and Jury System.  It could be that the Parole Boards are the ones who can ensure that the courts and Juries are handing down “Just Convictions”.

The Rescuer Complex

The Rescuer Complex ver. 1.0.4

“The Top Gun National Troubleshooter,” Retired

http:gadflyblog.com/tag/rescuer/

9/29/2017

Introduction

Much information has been written on the subject of “The Rescuer Complex.”  On subjects such as “Adult Children of Alcoholics,[i] it has been observed that the rescue complex is inevitable in children that grow up in alcoholic homes or drug addiction homes.  This observation has been expanded to include “very religious parents.”  Transactional analysis [ii] describes the rescuer complex as one who continually rescues a victim from an aggressor.  In transactional analysis, the aggressor is from the victim’s and rescuer’s perspective.   The rescuer complex can be directed toward the opposite sex.  This behavior has been observed of a teaching pastor in a local church who constantly came to the rescue of women in his church.   Unfortunately, the supposed aggressor now becomes the victim of the aggressive rescuer.  Thus this cycle of aggressor, victim and rescuer continues in a cycle.  The supposed aggressor is now the victim, and the rescuer the new aggressor, so who is going to rescue the new victim from the new aggressor?  The new rescuer is usually called “the organization,” as by now this is an organizational issue.

The Authoritarian and the Authoritative Parent

On reading Dr. Kevin Leman’s latest book “The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are,” [iii]  this writer noticed his definition of authoritarian and the authoritative parent, and the different results produced in the children who grow up in these two very different homes.  Other authors have denoted alcoholic parents or very religious parents as having an aggressive communication style; [iv]  Dr. Leman now describes them as authoritarian parents.  Authoritarian parents can also be denoted as parents who have an “I win, you lose” communication style.

A definition of authoritarian and authoritative parents was reported in study by The University of California, Berkeley in 2003: [v]

Authoritarian

“The authoritative parent attempts to shape, control and evaluate the behavior and attitudes of the child in accordance with a standard of conduct, usually an absolute standard, theologically motivated and formulated by a higher authority.  …………”

Authoritative

“The authoritative parent attempts to direct the child’s activities in a rational, issue-orientated manner.  She encourages verbal give and take, shares with the child the reasoning behind her policies, and solicits his objections when he refuses to conform. ………..”

Conclusion

This writer was identified, by his sergeant of flight-line jet engine mechanics in support of LBJ’s war in Vietnam, as a natural born troubleshooter.  That was over fifty troubleshooting years ago and what has been indelibly etched in this mind is this: “Before attempting to solve a problem, the problem must first be properly defined; failure to properly define the problem before solving the problem and taking action on the resulting solution will result in a bigger problem to solve.”   Having properly defining a problem the solution will be obvious.”

The contrast between these two definitions – authoritarian and authoritative parents – presents a very well-defined problem to the origin of The Rescuer Complex being the direct result of a parent’s authoritarian, aggressive, “I win, you lose” communication style, regardless of the type of dysfunctional family of origin, be it alcohol or drug addiction, et al.

Now that the problem has been properly defined the solution should be obvious.  Is it any wonder why many people with this “Rescue Complex” find themselves in a church?  The main mission of the Christian Church is to “Rescue (Save) People”.  Finding the solution to their “Rescue Complex” is the responsibility of the individual.

The SINS of the FATHER are PASSED DOWN to the THIRD and FOURTH GENERATION

The SINS of the FATHER are PASSED DOWN to the THIRD and FOURTH GENERATION

Ver. 1.0.4

The Top Gun National Troubleshooter, Retired

https://gadflyblog.com/tag/sins-of-father/

10/29/2017

Introduction

“The sins of the father are passed down to the third and fourth generation” is a quote from the Old Testament of the writer’s observations of history.  Although it is true for fathers and sons as in the case of alcoholism, drug abuse, dysfunctional aggressive communicators, etc. it is also true of the fathers of a nation (the leaders) whose citizen’s sons and daughters and their sons and daughters etc. will be subject to the sins of the fathers of their nation.

On September 11, 2001, democracy changed in the United States of America.  National policy of “We—Win, You—Lose” has been in place since the inception of our nation.  Even in our own Civil War it was “I–Win, You–Lose”.  Negotiating “Workable Compromises” was unheard of even until this day in 2017 with only a few notable exceptions.  Two of those exceptions were the Cuban Missile Crises with Russia during the John F. Kennedy administration when JFK stood alone against the Hawks that wanted to invade Cuba with USA forces and negotiated a “Workable Compromise” with the Russian leader Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, with the aid of the recently developed Polaris Submarine Missile. During the Richard M. Nixon administration when RMN signed a peace treaty with Ho Chi Minh’s representatives of North Vietnam ending USA’s long involvement in South Vietnam, RMN did not have to win the war as his predecessor LBJ proclaimed “He did not want to be the first president to lose a war”.  All other international conflicts have been “We–Win, You–Lose”.

The Peak of Democracy and Freedom in the USA

September 11, 2001 was the beginning of the massive terrorism attacks, on the USA and European countries, that we are experiencing to day from large terrorists organizations.  These terrorist organizations such as ISIS and ISIL had their beginnings during the Bush Administration primarily involving the President, Vice President and the Secretary of State.  The Iraq leader appeared to be massing weapons of mass destruction (WMD).   A low ranking thud was evaluated to prominence in the Sunni Muslim Community by this Bush Administration and then, (the USA extinguished him). This prominent Muslim leader had a vision of an Islamic State.  The Secretary of State argued to the United Nations that a Preemptive strike was warranted against the Iraq Sunni Muslim Administration.  The Bush Administration warned the Iraq Sunni Administration of the planned invasion, the Iraq Sunni Administration responded with clearing Iraq of all evidence of WMD’s.

This was the first Preemptive Strike by USA forces in the history of the USA and set in place the Bush Doctrine ofPreemptive Strikes against Terrorism”.   Our reputation as Preemptive Strikers is now cast in stone on the international scene.  Other non-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (non-NATO) Allies, now live in fear that the Americans will strike first and  are now justified in developing Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the shores of the USA.  The USA can no longer be trusted to hold their fire until provoked; The USA has established a policy of First Strike. These nations feel they must create equal forces to  protect themselves from the Americans.

Loss of Freedom and Democracy in the USA

This new “Preemptive Strike Policy” will not only encourage foreign, non-NATO countries to establish a nuclear threat, but terrorist activities against the USA, and Europe, can be expected to continue and increase; threatening the USA’s democracy and freedom, and the freedom of Europeans. The citizens of the USA will lose their freedom to more regulations and controls enacted to prevent terrorism.   The more regulation and laws we have the more Law Enforcers we will have to ensure compliance with these regulations and laws.  The citizens of the USA will become encumbered with more scrutiny from these Law Enforcers.

The Way Forward

There is only one way forward for the USA and that is to admit to our mistake of a preemptive strike on Iraq and those organizations forming and following a mission to bring the USA to its downfall.   In effect the USA must repent from its sin of “First Strike” and make amends with the enemies created by this “Preemptive Strike Policy”.  The leaders and representatives of the USA must learn the skill of negotiating “Workable Compromises”; that is actions that are not “I–Win, You–lose”, but “I–Win, You–Win agreements or in other words create Treaties with our adversaries in the world.

This is the only action that will save the USA from destruction that has beheld those counties before us whom created a “Preemptive Strike Policy”.  There are too many countries to name in history that have created “First Strike Policy” to name a few: Germany WWII, Germany WWI, the South USA Civil War, the Romans, and the Persians against the Greeks etc., etc. all of these countries or empires were defeated eventually by their First Strike Victims.  The only way forward is for the USA to abandon this Bush Preemptive Strike Policy and start negotiating Treaties representing “Workable Compromises” throughout the world.

 North Korea

A Preemptive Strike on North Korea, which is developing ICBM’s capable of reaching major cities in the USA, will result in an immediate response by North Korea against South Korea, Japan and Guam, a USA territory and major Pacific US Air Base.  This is A NO-WIN SITUATION for all parties concerned.

North Korea is justified in their fear of a Preemptive Strike from the USA.  What do the North Koreans want (?), probably the same thing that Ho Chi Minh wanted in Vietnam, a unified Vietnam without the interference of the USA Military!  Can the USA prevent the North Korean’s from a preemptive strike against South Korea?  It is unlikely that North Korea would move against South Korea with a nuclear weapon and have no interest in a nuclear attack against Japan. The saber rattling, by the North Korean’s, against Guam is probably just that. The North Korean’s know that the USA cannot stop them from developing a nuclear ICBM capability and they are letting the USA see this for a fact!

Cyber-Attack

A cyber-attack to disrupt the production of weapons grade uranium has been used by USA allies against Iran’s centrifuge operations that produce weapons grade uranium.  To initiate a preemptive cyber-attack on North Korea, be its centrifuges or other infrastructure, would certainly result in cyber-attack retaliations by North Korea against the USA’s infrastructure notably the power grid.  North Korea has already demonstrated its ability to disrupt major businesses in the USA.

Restrained USA

The USA is caught in a Military No-Win Situation with North Korea there is no military solution to North Korea’s ICBM capabilities.  The best result will be obtained by negotiations and limiting the access to nuclear materials by North Korea.  In addition, the best result will be a Stand-Off and a long-term policy to improve the USA’s relationship with North Korea; the USA abandoning the Bush Administration’s First Strike Policy; and establish a policy of negotiating workable compromises.

Introduction

Football in the USA is over a century old and there have developed many theories on how to win the game.  We think we have made much improvements to the game like helmets, shoulder pads, griddle pads, thigh pads etc.  Rules like not targeting the ball possessor with a helmet to helmet attack or low hits or illegal blocks.  We moved the kickoff up the field to reduce the number of full speed head-on collisions with the special team’s players.  We moved the extra point further back from the end-zone to make the game more interesting.  Yet, this writer thinks that unpadded Rugby players have fewer injuries and concussions than footballs padded up players.  The mentality is that “I am padded up so I can hit them has hard as I can without injuring myself”.

Game Strategy

Game strategy has advanced beyond anyone’s dreams decades ago.  It is amazing how an offensive can get a receiver open in the end-zone with members from the offensive team coordinating their moves.  But what this writer has observed is that winning the game comes down to the two second pass, one one-thousand, two-one-thousand, throw the ball.  If a quarterback can do this one hundred percent of their passes, they will have a greater than ninety percent chance of winning the game.  If they throw fifty percent two second passes and fifty percent three second passes the probability will decrease to about a fifty percent chance of winning of the game.  If the quarterback is throwing four second passes, he will spend a lot of time being sacked.  After three seconds the quarterback must either throw the ball or start running or scrambling.  Several four second passes will decrease the probability to less than ten percent for winning the game.

The String-Bat Model

The String-Bat Model ver. 1.1.1

By: Jack E Johnston

March 31, 2012

Copyright 2012
http://thephilosopheronpolitics.wordpress.com/tag/power-hitting/

Introduction

In the latter half of the 1970s, I developed the “String-Bat Model” for hitting softballs.  My team had me batting in the clean-up position; I was their big hitter.  The String-Bat Model is equally applicable to baseballs.

The String-Bat Model is very simple.  What can be done to a string to hit a ball?  Any bending moment will only bend the string.  The only motion available is to pull on the string.  Thus the “String-Bat” is put in motion by rotating the hips and when the bat is at belt level or level, pull on the end of the String-Bat toward center field and make contact with the ball.  Skill comes in learning how fast to rotate the hips to start the String-Bat in motion.  Too fast of a start of the rotation, and the String-Bat will pass the point where the end of the bat can be pulled to center field, and the bat will un-cock the wrists and the swing will fail to develop full velocity.  The hips must be rotated with a constantly increasing acceleration so that when the String-Bat reaches level, the hands can pull the end of the bat towards center field.  Too slow a rotation, and the ball will pass before the swing develops.  It is best to start with a slow rotation and gradually increase the speed coordinated with the pull to center field. As a feedback, it should feel like you are pulling on a 25-pound bowling ball.   The belt buckle should end up facing center field.  Anything learned slowly can be produced fast with practice; start slow to develop the coordination, and then slowly increase the speed of performance.

There are three variations for hitting the ball.  1) With the back facing elbow held level (horizontal), a hard hit line drive will result from the String-Bat Model swing.  2) With the rear facing elbow lowered, a deep hit fly ball will result from the String-Bat Model swing. 3)  Aim to put the centerline of the bat at a half inch below the center of the ball with a level or 10-degree. launch angle, and significant rotation will be imparted to the ball, giving it lift to travel 100 feet or so further than if there is no rotation on the ball (Fig 55, ref. 1). Aim a little lower for fastballs than for curveballs.[i]

Stance: The feet are placed at shoulder width and are fixed in place.  It is not recommended to lunge to hit the ball, as the bat is better placed on the ball with no change in the position of the batter relative to the path of the ball.

The physics behind the String-Bat Model is equally simple.  As the centripetal acceleration is increased along the axis of the String-Bat, the velocity at the end of the bat will increase as the square of this increase in acceleration.  Thus, if the acceleration towards center field is doubled, the velocity at the end of the bat will increase by a factor of four.  If the acceleration towards center field is increased by a factor of four, the velocity at the end of the String-Bat will increase by a factor of 16.

The Babe Ruth Power Swing: Point the lead foot toward center field.  Rotate the hips so the belt buckle is facing center field.  Pull on the end of the bat towards center field.  Put the bat on the ball.

Power Golf Swing

Power Golf Swing ver. 1.1.3

By: Jack E Johnston

Revised 9/10/2017

 Copyright 2014

https://gadflyblog.com/tag/power-golf/

In days past (younger days) my golf drives were 300 yards plus with a set of garage sale golf clubs.  Power Golf is similar to the String-Bat Model for swinging a baseball bat.  Golf has the advantage that the ball in not moving and it all comes down to timing and form of the golf swing.

Driving and Fairway woods

  1. For Driving, set the ball on the tee, about 1” high, not too low, not so high that the ball goes up too steep to gain distance. For a fairway shot bring the club head back like hitting an iron shot, hit into the ball, (what goes down will go up, basic rule of golf).
  2. Address the ball with the feet shoulder width apart and the ball slightly forward of the middle.   For shorter shaft woods move the ball towards the back foot.
  3. Grip the club with the “Vardon Grip” and the “sweet spot” is behind the ball. Put the club shaft in the first knuckle of the index finger and below the fleshy part of the palm.
  4. Apply second hand with little finger overlapping index finger of first hand. Index and thumb pinching the club with thumb on the top of the shaft. Grip the shaft with the remaining three fingers. This is the strong hand week hand grip (Harry Vardon Grip (1870-1937) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Vardon).
  5. Standing erect bend the knees as if sitting in a chair.
  6. Maneuver the feet until the club “sweet spot” is behind the ball.
  7. Bring the club head back level with the grass behind the ball rotating the hips.
  8. The left arm is straight and the eyes are fixed on the ball.
  9. Keep the heels of the feet on the ground.
  10. Bring the club head to the top of the backswing in the biggest arch that can be developed. The club should come to rest at the top of the backswing and be parallel to the target line and parallel to the ground.
  11. There should be 2/3 of the body weight on the inside of the back foot; keep the heels of the feet on the ground.
  12. Initiate the swing by rotating the hips very slowly and accelerate the rotation slowly as if gravity is pulling the club head down, A fast rotation of the hips is not necessary even detrimental as the club head will pass by the “Belt High” mark and uncock the wrists and it will be impossible to pull the shaft to the target.  The club head should follow the wide arc of the backswing.  The club shaft will come down and be parallel to the ground and belt high.
  13.  Pull on the end of the shaft towards the target (as if pulling on a string connecting the club head to the club grip) there will be felt a huge resistance, to the pull, along the shaft and both feet will feel like they are going to slide backwards (this is the reason the shoes are cleated) and the club head will uncock the wrists as it completes its wide arc.  If the timing is correct it will feel like pulling on a 40 pound bowling ball and the club head will precede the shaft to the ball, the shaft is bent forward; (the head is driving the shaft, not the shaft driving the head).  The brain can slow this high speed action of the club head and the club head arriving at the ball ahead of the shaft can be seen with the naked eye.  It should take all of the strength that can be mustered to pull the club head toward the target.  Keep the eyes fixed on the ball spot until after contact, keep the head down and left arm straight (right handed players) until beyond contact.
  14. Transfer all your weight to the front foot which is planted firmly on the ground.
  15. The heel, of the back foot, comes up and the toe rotates to face the foot at the target.   The belt buckle should be facing the target.
  16. Finish high with the club parallel to the ground and neck high.

The Physics

The physics behind the “Power Golf Swing” is equally simple.  As the centripetal acceleration is increased along the axis of the “Club Shaft” the velocity at the club head will increase as the square of this increase in acceleration.  Thus if the acceleration towards the target is doubled the velocity at the club head will increase by a factor of four.  If the acceleration towards the target is increased by a factor of four, the velocity at the club head will increase by a factor of sixteen.   Anyone who has swung a Yo-Yo has experienced the effect of centripetal acceleration, as the Yo-Yo is swung pull on the string and the yo-yo accelerates rapidly.  For the religious the sling that killed Goliath can be used, as the sling is put into a circular motion and the tether pulled on, the stone, in the pocket, accelerates to the velocity of a Magnum 357 bullet.

Irons

The swing is similar to the above, but adjusting the height of the backswing as necessary.  For the five iron position the ball about ½” back of the middle or in alignment with the heal of the back foot.  For longer clubs move the ball toward the front foot.  For shorter irons move the ball toward the back foot.  The nine and wedge iron ball position is even with the instep of the back foot.

  1. Bring the club to the backswing with the chosen height for the shot.
  2. Start the swing by pulling with the left side and hit the ball as if driving it into the ground. A basic principle in golf is that what goes down comes up.  To make the ball rise vertically hit the ball down into the ground.
  3. Finish the swing as above with the club finishing high around the neck , the weight is on the front foot and the back heal comes up the toe rotating to face the target and the belt buckle is facing the target.

In deep grass put the ball further back and swing to hit the ball first.

Pitching

  1. Put the ball off the instep of the back foot. Align the wide part of the club to the ball.
  2. Open the stance by moving the front foot away from the target line.  This will allow room for the hands to come through.
  3. Start the back backswing directly in line with the target.
  4. Swing to hit the ball first.
  5. Adjust backswing for distance of shot and swing as though throwing the club head to the target.
  6. On short pitches open up the club head than align the shaft to the large portion of the club head.
  7. Open up the stance to accommodate short distances.
  8. This will generate “The Flop Shot” the ball will stay close to where it lands.

Bunkers around the Green

  1. Open the club face depending on the distance required.
  2. Open the stance depending on the distance required.
  3. Figuratively put a dollar bill under the ball with the ball in the center. The dollar bill represents the divot to take in the sand. Take more or less sand to adjust the distance. The sand will move the ball. Do not hit the ball directly as it will go a long way. Lift the club straight up and come down at the visualized marked spot behind the ball. Follow thru as required by distance. It is not allowable to touch the sand with the club prior to the swing.

Long Range Bunkers

Make the preparation for the shot as above, but with a closed stance.  Pick the ball off the sand as distance is the primary objective.

Putting

  1. Remove the flag stick from the hole straight up as to not damage the sides of the cup.
  2. Read the green for slop and knap. Plan a path to the hole by sighting the green from different viewpoints.
  3. Stand over the ball with the head directly over the ball.
  4. Visually mark the target (e.g. two or three ball widths to right or left of the hole or even more for steep slopes) visualize the ball going on this path.
  5. A relaxed grip is best with the ball in the center of the club head. Putt the shot with the shoulders as these are large muscles and will give consistent results as the body fatigues.
  6. Follow the ball to the hole with the club head until way past contact.

Alternate Putting:

  1. After surveying the green and choosing the path of the ball, put the putter behind the ball.
  2. Squat behind the ball and line up the putter square to the line of travel of the putt.
  3. Holding only a finger on top of the club, take a stance of preference to putt the ball.
  4. Grip the club with the preferred grip without moving the Putter.
  5. Look at the line of the putt to the hole and rotate the shoulders bringing the Putter back the appropriate distance from the ball.
  6. Rotate the shoulders to putt the ball on the line with the correct speed to the hole keeping your eyes on the path of the ball and the hole.

Pick the ball up out of the cup and start over on the next hole.

Warning

This is not going to be a short report on the solution to living free, as citizens, in a free country like the USA, but it is probably the most import report ever written concerning our freedom as citizens living in a free nation.

Introduction

Conflict will occur between citizens, as well as between citizens and authorities, in all situations imaginable in our towns, communities and cities of all sizes. It will even happen in music festivals, county fairs or at any other events where we are compressed into a small space. It is how we resolve these conflicts that determine if we are going to live as free citizens in this free country, or are regulated by rules, laws and law enforcers, resulting in the loss of our freedom as citizens of a free nation.

Qualifications of this Writer

What are the qualifications of this writer to address this issue of freedom for citizens within a free nation?

Innate and Environmental Knowledge

In other words, what skills, knowledge and abilities did I receive from my parents and ancestors, and what did I learn from growing up in a family with two college graduates for parents?  Birth position in the family often is a major factor in developing our personalities and the personality traits that go with learning from these relationships with our parents, siblings and the community in which we grow up. [i]

I was born last in a family of eight children, last of four children by my mother, who was a college graduate when less than three percent of women in the USA had college degrees.  I was raised in a small farming community and was known by the community as “Doc’s Kid.”  My father was a veterinarian and the director of the Quality Control Department at a local creamery.   He was also the County Health Inspector who inspected the milk producing dairy farms to ensure disease-free and healthy milk.  I was also mostly known as “The Inspector’s Kid,” even by my farming classmates.  In retirement, he was invited to be the Plant Health Inspector at a meat producing plant just outside of town.

Lessons Learned from my Father

As a young teenager, I accompanied my father on his inspections of the dairy farms.  On one occasion, as he was finishing up this inspection, he confronted the dairy producer within earshot.  My father told the dairyman, “Make sure the lids on the milk cans are on tight as water is leaking into them.”  In this time period, the milk was kept cool in a spring-fed pool of water until the milk truck arrived to pick up the milk.  The dairyman got the point; my father knew from laboratory analysis that he was watering down his milk to increase the volume of milk and increase his profit.  When we got back into the car my father said to me, “Always give them a way out.”

When my father was the Health Inspector at the local meat-producing plant, he brought to the attention of the meat producers that there was a health problem in the sausage producing line.  The managers of the plant did not agree with this inspection report.  The plant was required, by Congress, to have a meat inspector in their employment.  This gave the managers of the plant the option to hire and fire inspectors as needed to produce meat and make their profit margin acceptable.  My father was terminated as Health Inspector for this meat-producing plant.  My father said to me, “Always call it like you see it and you will never be wrong.
I applied this later in my career, as the Quality Control Inspector for the Superconductors being manufactured by a vendor for a large magnetic fusion test facility (MFTF) at The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore (LLNL), CA.  I found a length of conductor slightly out of specification for its content ratio of copper and superconducting material.  Since it was not too far out of specification, one of the overseeing engineers wanted me to “fudge” the numbers and pass the superconductor on to the assemble people.  “Call it like you see it and you will never be wrong.”  If you call it like someone else wants you to call it; you will be wrong every time. I have been in many situations as a troubleshooter and always followed my father’s instructions.

The Development of a Troubleshooter

It is the small things in life that put us on paths that we will follow all our lives.  When I was still on a tricycle, three of my sisters came home from out-of-state college to find out that their college funding was being terminated.  In those days, it was more important for men to go to college than women, and this kid on the tricycle became a priority for college.  My first generation college graduate parents did what a lot of, new to the middle class, parents do, and that is they had more kids than they could get through college and had to make the hard choice of who was going to college.  My father died my last semester in high school, and my five sisters were convinced that I was too stupid to go to college as I barely made it through high school.  This was true, except for in the subjects of math and science, where I excelled.  My science teacher lobbied for me to go to college and study physics, but I ended up leaving my Midwestern home and working in a saw mill on the Pacific coast.

After a year working in the saw mill, I joined the US Air Force. I graduated at the top of my class at Jet Engine Mechanic Training School and also later passed the exam to move up in grade with a perfect score, which was something that had never been accomplished before.  In fact, I was accused of cheating, but this charge was dismissed. I was assigned to the Small Gas Turbine Shop and was assigned to a trainer.  Small Gas Turbines were used to generate axillary electrical power (APU) for the fuel tankers, a.k.a. KC135’s. It refuels the B52 bombers – the largest bombers in the fleet – and was used extensively in LBJ’s War.

My trainer and I went out to one of these tankers and, when, at the flight deck, we approached the APU in the rear of the plane, he popped the lid off.  He gave me my instructions, “When you find out where the problem is the solution will be obvious. I’m going down here to take a nap. You wake me up if you need me” (There were two cots for the refueler’s to lie on during the refueling operations). This is the only training that I ever received in the art of troubleshooting.

This writer ended up in LBJ’s war in the South Pacific.  I prefer to use the name of the president who was promoting this war, as this puts the responsivity for the war where it belongs – on the Commander-in-Chief (another problem for another day).  I was assigned to a Material Transport Wing and we sent helicopters and aluminum caskets into South Vietnam. We left the helicopters there; the coffins were filled with the fallen and we sent them back to the USA to be buried by their families.   I was assigned to the Flight Line Jet Engine support group.  We had two shifts that worked a twelve-hour shift (noon to midnight and midnight to noon) for four days, then had three days off and then switched shift hours (this was necessary as it was too hot to sleep during the daylight hours and it gave us time to catch up on missed sleep when on the noon to midnight shift).

My sergeant observed that I had a special talent for troubleshooting the problems associated with the jet engines and I was often called on to give a second opinion on an engine waiting for parts to arrive from the states.  Arriving on shift at noon, my sergeant picked me up first thing.  We headed for a transport aircraft that the night crew had been troubleshooting all night without being able to identify the problem.  The sergeant explained to me the symptoms the engine was exhibiting.   When we reached the front of the aircraft, I told my sergeant “where the problem was and what the solution would be to fix the problem”.  We had that aircraft ready to take off in a couple of hours.

 On to College

At the end of my tour of duty, I headed off to college at a technical school, following my hands-on training as a jet engine mechanic.  College was a real shock as I had to learn things that I knew nothing about, like using a T-square and a drawing board, making two lines connect or be parallel to each other, how to use a slide rule to do multiplication and division problems, how to read and remember what I had read!  One summer, I was hired by the department to do the maintenance on the laboratory equipment and assist my metallurgical professor with the investigation of a phase change in a gold-lead alloy system.  This investigation had been going on for more than a few years without success.  I designed and built a compressing device that would mix the two elements together at different temperatures.  The phase change would be observed using an X-ray diffraction spectrometer.  Performing the mixing at lower temperatures, I noticed a change in color in the mixture.  Sure enough, this was the phase change we had been looking for.  Now with this additional indicator (the change in color), I could perform the experiments faster and get more data and higher resolution to the temperature of the phase change.  The temperature of the phase change was found to be within a few degrees Celsius.

Experience at LLNL

I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, with minors in Physics and Metallurgy.  When I applied for a position at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), I found out that my metallurgical professor’s review stated that “I was the most advanced student to ever go through that college”.  I was accepted on the staff at LLNL and assigned to a group working to develop fusion energy as a new source of energy.  After about ten years with LLNL, I was working with the Superconducting Development Group to develop a new high field superconductor for a high field test facility (HFTF).  I was invited to lunch by the program manager and the lead engineer on this project.  They were discussing the manufacturing problems at the contractor’s production facility on the east coast.  I offered up my opinion: “Find out where the problem is and the solution will be obvious.”  I was told to pack my bags and go troubleshoot the problems associated with the manufacturing process for this new high field superconductor.

On reaching this production facility on the east coast and observing the production process, I soon identified where the problem was.  However, this production line had more than a few problems.  We shut the production line down and I returned to LLNL where we redesigned and built new equipment for most of the production line.  However, we had not yet addressed the problem that I first identified.  This is where I was first introduced to Adlerian Psychology (Birth-Order Psychology – more on this subject to come; stay tuned).  The lead engineer on this production line refused to acknowledge that the problem I had identified as “The Problem” was the actual problem.  From my studies in Adlerian Psychology, I found that one of the traits of a firstborn in a family is that they will develop leadership traits and one of the attributes of these leadership traits is that “they know they are right even when they are not.”[ii]  We were running out of funds and running out of conductors to process through this last sept in the production process.  I knew I had to take control of the situation.  On identifying the person in this facility with the expertise to solve this problem, I met with him in his office.  My position was this: “You find a solution to this problem and I will design, build and implement your solution.”  He did and I did, and we sent the conductors ready for the coil winder that I had already designed and built and we created a world record magnetic field across a 40-millimeter bore in the HFTF.  I received an award for “Performance, above and beyond the Call of Duty.

After about twenty-five years at LLNL, I had received many challenges and worked on several projects of national interest.  At LLNL, it seems there is always a national crisis that needs to be solved.  I had been working with a young female engineer from MIT.  There is an invisible sign above the doors to LLNL that states that “Only the Best of the Best Shall Pass through These Doors.”   She was definitely one of the best of the best in the nation.  She was the only child of two PhD engineers and had received an abundance of “innate skills, knowledge and abilities” from her parents and graduated at the top of her class at MIT.

Working with her was quite an experience and I advanced my knowledge of Adlerian Psychology.  We were first induced in “My Experimental Laboratory” by the lead engineer of our group.  I was seated on a chair in my lab and when I was introduced to her as her lab partner for her upcoming experiments, she jumped into giving me directions on how to proceed: “I want this over there and I want that over here!!!!”  After I picked myself up from the floor – as she literally blew me off my chair – I stood before her and stated, “I don’t want this over there, I want it here, and I don’t want that over here, I want it over there!!!”  She looked at our lead engineer and he stated, “See, he can do that too.”  Welcome to the Adlerian Psychology of only children (“I Want” is paramount to their communication style).

At LLNL, there are contract employees who are communication experts and they teach classes on communication skills and on conflict resolution and teamwork communications. With the filter on the entry door “The Best of the Best,” these communication instructors will never run out of students to teach. I have gone through some of these classes twice to try and get the hang of this “Assertive Communication Style,” a.k.a. “adult to adult” or “win-win” communication.  We often go into the workforce with the communication style we developed in our family of origin and from parents who were low on the communication learning curve.  Without retraining to an assertive style, we will take the communication style learned from our developing years in our families to the grave.  It takes the whole organization to retrain one of these aggressive communicators; a one-on-one attempt will result in them thrashing you into the ground (more on this subject to come).

The Most Important Task-Force Ever at LLNL

The organization worked to improve this young lady’s communication style to an assertive win-win style.  We worked together as a team of two for about four years.  I was called on to join a task-force that was forming up to solve the latest national crisis issue.  When I met with the team, I suggested that they bring my partner onto the task-force, as she was very intelligent and a good investigator.  A few weeks later she showed up as the leader of this task-force.  I found out later that it was standard procedure at LLNL to put an up-and-coming engineer in charge of a group and support them with more experienced personnel; in this way they teach the young, up and coming, how to lead and then they move up to leadership roles  in the organization.

We were on this task-force for about a year.  As mentioned previously, I was considered too stupid to go to college by my sisters and ended up in a hands-on environment rather than the mathematical environment that regular physics majors receive.  I later concluded that the visualization method of troubleshooting that I had used in my Air Force experience must have come to me as innate knowledge from my father.  I did nothing to achieve these visualization skills; they just came naturally.  There was a core group of about a dozen engineers and physicists on this task-force and hundreds of support personnel:  physicists, chemists, material scientists, computer modelers, etc.  When I wasn’t needed elsewhere, I spent my time in my lay-back chair with my feet on my desk and my hat pulled over my eyes.  This was the meditation routine that I developed or copied from others.  One day, I looked at an illustration on the website of the local college where I was improving on my physics education.  It was an “A-ha” moment.  I then realized where “The identified problem” was and what the physics for this phenomenon was. Writing up my findings and sending them to the program manager with my suggestion for further study, I was on hold for a few weeks.  Another experimental team addressed “The identified problem”, made the necessary changes and performed a successful mission accomplished test.  The task-force was dissolved.  It was the successful completion of this task-force that I earned the reputation as “The Top Gun National Troubleshooter.” This young MIT and now Stanford graduate engineer left LLNL to design toys for children.  She left with a review of my performance “She thought I was the nation’s secret weapon”.  End of discussion on this writer’s qualifications as a National Troubleshooter.  Q .E. D.

A Side Bar on Communication Styles

One of the task-force leaders came to my office a few weeks later and wanted to know how I solved the problem.  When I walked to my whiteboard to draw an illustration of the phenomena, he stated “I don’t want to see an illustration and I don’t want to hear anything about religion.” (I guess my reputation for relying on a higher power preceded me.) He proceeded to ask me questions in the Socratic style thinking that the right question would produce the best answer.  Some people are very visual and some people are very verbal; we could not even communicate with one another because of this extreme difference in skills.

The Firstborn Syndrome

Because of the sign over the entry doors to LLNL, only the best of the best are on staff at LLNL.  With this type of filter on the entry doors, the results are that most of the staff is either the only child or the firstborn child in their respective families and they have their distinctive communication styles (more on this subject to come).  For about ten years, I was a member of a Platform Speakers Club at LLNL. At one of our group meetings in a semi-large conference room that was fully packed with our club members, I had control of the podium and I asked the question, “How many in this room are the firstborn child in their family?” A show of hands indicated that everyone in this conference room was the firstborn in their family, except me.  I’m a member of a study group in a church called the Explorers; there are more people with PhDs in this class than one would normally find in a whole church body.  I asked a similar question in this group: “How many men in this class have and older brother?”  Ninety percent of the men raised their hand.  Although some of us had a brother that was ten to even sixteen years older, the profile still fit us.  I visited my old church and did a sample survey and found the same results (more on this subject to come).  The conclusion must be that firstborn brothers go into technical fields and the younger brothers go to church.  This Adlerian Psychology is really fascinating.

Communication Styles

The gurus of communication have identified four styles of communication that pretty much describes all of our citizens.  They are identified by four different characteristics.

Passive Aggressive Submissive Assertive Aggressive
You win; I lose, but I will get you back. You win; I lose You win; I win I win; you lose
Snake-in-the-grass Doormat Adults Tyrant
Loser to tyrant Child to adult Adult to adult Adult to child

Adlerian Psychology and Communication Styles

There are several different scenarios on how these communication styles are formed in our formative years in our family of origin.  Dr. Kevin Leman, Professor of Psychology, University of Arizona, Tucson, describes two different firstborn styles: compliant and controlling.   I would guess that these two different traits would fall into the submissive and aggressive categories of communications.  Falling back on Adlerian Psychology, my observations are that if a firstborn has a same sex sibling close in age, they will develop an aggressive communication style.  If a firstborn has an opposite sex sibling close in age, they will develop a compliant communication style.  There can be other factors involved, such as an alcoholic or drug-addicted parent.  Keep in mind that this is psychology and there are always exceptions and anomalies in the database.

The younger same sex near sibling would likely develop a submissive communication style.  The opposite sex near sibling could well develop a firstborn personality.  On down the family birth order, there will be a mixture of middle born children.  The “True Middleborn” will be caught between a same sex near older sibling and a close same sex younger sibling.  These Middleborns will have to negotiate for their own personal space and act as a referee between their older and younger same sex sibling.  Therefore, they will grow into adulthood as negotiators and peace keepers. [iii]  Other combinations of Middleborn siblings is a mixed bag and too difficult to analyze or theorize.  The Lastborn of close in age siblings will develop a personality, skills and traits that will enable them to do well in marketplaces as sales persons or marketers taking advantage of their developed social skills.  Dr. Leman discusses the traits of all these different types of birth orders in great detail in his many books. [iv]

Personnel for Microcosm’s Security and the Nation’s Police Forces

From these discussions and insight into personalities and traits of the different family birth order, could there be a solution to police abuse of our citizens?  Can these different birth orders provide guidance to jobs, the police beat and special assignments?  For instance, the true middle born will develop natural abilities in “Peace-Keeping and NegotiatingWorkable Compromises.” Therefore they are a natural fit for domestic interaction with our citizens.  Can the aggressive personalities be retrained to exhibit an assertive style of communication and the accompanying “attitude adjustment?” Certainly, the younger the officers, the more easily they would be able to make the adjustment to the assertive, win-win style.  Then there are police assignments that require a hard-nosed aggressive communication style, with people that need to be brought “under control”, where “Being in Control”  is the prominent trait of the Firstborn with a near (within five years) same sex younger sibling, making a perfect fit for this job assignment. [v]

Negotiating a “Workable Compromise

The first step in negotiating a workable compromise is to draw a line in the sand that represents your borderline that “works for you.”  Do not accept any compromise that does not work for you; other solutions to the conflict must be addressed to find a solution that works for all parties involved.  This is the basic concept to “Living as Free Citizens in a Free Nation.”   Q. E. D.

Case Study

Microcosms

There are microcosms of citizens coming together in close circumstances.  These microcosms can be used as test-beds to develop strategies that allow citizens to live free in a free nation.  There a several varieties of these events where citizens come together for a short period of time.  My one experience is with a music festival that meets yearly during the week of Father’s Day.  Some people come with tents, some come in small RV trailers, and some in large, home-sized RVs, and these people live together in a compact space for four days.

Co-existence of Compromiser’s and Rule Enforcers

This festival has as an organization with a seated volunteer board of directors who are responsible for all aspects of putting on this enormous music festival.  Talent contributors come from all across the country, as do the attendees.  This board of directors has chosen to use rules and rule enforcers to manage this large group of mostly rule-abiding attendees.  Even the fairgrounds where this festival is held have its own set of rules to follow.  Therein lies the challenge – can negotiating a workable compromise and rule enforcers coexist with each other?  My recent experience in this exact situation says no, they cannot coexist.  We can either have negotiators or enforcers, but we cannot have both at the same time if we want to live free in a free nation.

Festival Father’s Day 2017

We had an anomaly, for this time of the year; a rain storm had hit this area with a vengeance.  This created a mud swamp where it is designated RV parking.  Several RVs got stuck in the mud and left deep ruts, even in the RV designated spot that I had specifically reserved six months earlier.  It gave me a great view overlooking the lake just past a public area with picnic tables.  One caveat of this designated RV parking space was that someone had gotten stuck in the mud at one end of the space and left deep ruts, now dry and hard, covering about 25 percent of the RV parking space.  All the RV spaces were marked with white lines and were adjacent to each other, both sideways and front to back.  I pulled the RV trailer right next to the line opposite the deep ruts and extended my awning and patio carpet just past the ruts.  My truck is an integral part of my rig, as a second refrigerator is in the truck and plugged into the RV trailer.  This means the truck needs to stay connected to the RV trailer, making it too long to fit in our designated parking spot while missing the deep ruts.  The RV spaces are outlined in white and I had to encroach on the RV parking spot in front of mine, but there was significant space for this RV to move back about three feet, at least at this time four days before the rest of the RVs showed up for the festival (I was attending the pre-festival Music Camp).  I knew this was going to result in an attempt to negotiate a workable compromise, so I did my best to position my patio close to the deep ruts.

Pre-Festival Music Camp

My dog and I arrived four days prior to the opening of the music festival and I attended a music camp for these four days.  The traffic in the RV park was very limited during this time, giving my dog room to run after being tied up on a leash all day.  He could not get enough of running free after spending all day under the RV trailer (as per festival rules).

The Festival Starts

On the first day of the festival, RVs started showing up and available real estate was disappearing.  Some of us RV campers paid for an electric hook-up and were in the designated parking areas.  Other RV campers parked at free will as space was available.   The RV that was designated to park in the spot where my truck had encroached showed up later than most and the opportunity for accommodating this situation with the deep ruts was getting thinner.  When this large RV showed up, most of the free spaces were taken and the RV park manager could not find a solution that would allow a fire truck access to all the RVs.

Attempt to Negotiate a Workable Compromise

We were in the process of coming up with alternatives when about a dozen uniformed security personal showed up at my RV. The first officer on the scene said “You’re not going to like this”.  They were bent on forcing me to accept a compromise that I already had decided would not work for me.  In fact, their head of security showed up and designated me as a “rule breaker” and said that “if I broke one rule, I probably broke other rules as well”. He asked me if my dog was on a leash (a festival grounds rule).  I informed him that the dog was in plain sight and he could see for himself if my dog was on a leash.  I was very upset that he had affixed a label to me.  Affixing a label on someone or group of persons is the first step in dehumanizing them and then they are deprived of their human rights and, in the USA, deprived of their rights under the Constitution of the USA.  I explained to him what a “red herring” is.  “One is on their way to accomplishing their objective when a red herring swims by and instead of staying focused on the objective they chase after the red herring.”  I then pointed out to him that he had brought a red herring to this discussion.  One alternative that was not discussed was filling up the ruts with dirt and making this RV space completely usable.  If each of those dozen security officers came with a bucket of dirt, the situation would have been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.  Workable compromise negotiations came to a standstill on the arrival of the security personnel.  My brain was now traumatized; on reflection, after the fact, I have thought of other options that I could have come up with to facilitate the workable compromise.  This incident has led me to the conclusion that Negotiators and Rule Enforcers cannot coexist; they are mutually exclusive.

Change in Plans

I now considered my options.  This security team was bent on forcing me to accept a compromise that I already had established would not work for me.  The first rule of negotiating a workable compromise is: “Don’t be forced into accepting a compromise that does not work for you!”  My dog was exhibiting signs of depression. He had been tied up for the last four days according to festival rules and he had no place to run free or socialize with other canines.  He was not allowed to accompany me to class, to lunch or to the audience area of the festival.  When I got back to see him at the RV, he was overjoyed to see me.  But now he is not eating and is camped under the RV trailer.  With strange security personnel all over our RV space, my dog was now traumatized.  I decided it was best to pack up and leave the festival.  I got my partner on the phone and she said she was still at home. I told her to stay there as we were coming home.  She was able to cancel her hotel reservations without a penalty due to a high demand for rooms.

Packing up the RV for Travel

As the officers of the security team were leaving in their golf cart, we confirmed that we were all war veterans.  I stated to them: “This was not the freedom that I fought a war for, and I do not think that any of the 5,000 fallen that I sent back to be buried by their families would agree that this is the freedom they died for.” I think the security team’s war veterans agreed to this statement.  The head of security wanted to make sure that I left, so he stationed two of his officers next to my truck to make sure I did not change my mind and that I removed my RV in a timely manner.   I have formed the habit of looking for the silver lining in all situations of this nature.  Here was an opportunity to interview two security officers and apply my knowledge of Adlerian Psychology to the situation at hand.  One of the officers was showing definite signs of an aggressive communication style, as he did not pass up any opportunity to show me that “he had authority over me and had the ability to cause me great pain.”  He was also prodding me to get my RV out of there in a timely manner.  The other officer presented himself in a helpful manner.  I therefore pointed a finger at the officer with the aggressive personality and told him that he was the firstborn in his family (I should have asked him how many years younger was his brother, as this situation produces the most aggressive personalities) and I told the other officer that he was a middle born in his family.  They both confirmed that I was right.  The aggressive officer continued to assert his authority and the middle born officer continued to seek peace.  I asked them why they were here supervising my withdrawal from this festival as I had volunteered to leave, and the aggressive one stated, “Because you pissed off the boss.”

I missed an opportunity to bring up the Nuremberg Trials of German Nazi officers who obeyed the commands of their demented leader rather than doing what they knew in their hearts was the right thing to do.  These dis-empowered officers were convicted of war crimes against humanity and were sent to the gallows.  It is this writer’s observation that it is the dis-empowered people in the world that cause the most pain and suffering for other people.

I got the RV trailer packed up and ready to go.  I was traumatized myself from this experience with Rule Enforcers and I didn’t use my RV pre-trip checklist, so did not turn off the hot water heater or the propane tanks. But we made it home without incident or only minor incidents.

Missing the festival was not a big loss as, at the last three festivals, we spent our time in camp listening to the music on the radio, going to the audience area only to buy CDs or ice cream.  Most of the performers dress like they just came out of the barn so there is no visual performance to be viewed!  The only group I had marked this year to go listen to and see was Dole Lawson, for I knew he would be dressed like a performing artist.

How Can We Improve the Management of this Festival?

I suggest we start with the requirement that to become or remain on the Board of Directors, Security Personnel and membership in this organization a person must produce a certificate of completion in an Assertive Communication Class and a Class on Negotiating Workable Compromises.  These two classes would be offered and taught by the organization’s contracted experts in the hands-on-methods of assertive communication and negotiating workable compromises

Our Citizens (Members) Developed Communication Style

Most of us have developed our communication style and skills from our family of origin from parents who had poor communication skills.  Others spent a good deal of their life communicating with children in an adult-to-child (aggressive) mode and controlling by rules.  They too must learn the adult-to-adult (assertive) communication style and how to negotiate a workable compromise.  Festivals like this could be used, as a microcosm of the nation, could produce, with these actions, a role model for the rest of the nation to follow.

Guidelines not Rules

My dog Buddy had been leashed up and not allowed to accompany me to any events at Music Camp for four days.  He was now depressed, not eating and traumatized from all the security personnel on our RV site.  I offered to leave the FDF, as a solution to the lack of space problem, Buddy was ecstatic to get back home and Run Free; he ran from one end of our property to the other as fast as he could go.  One of the dog owners in the RV lot, whose little canine was running free, off-leash, said that “He sees the rules as guidelines to be interpreted by each individual”.  I think he has the solution to living free in a free nation. Guidelines not rules or laws will eliminate the need for Rule Enforcers in the microcosms and Law Enforcers in the nation.  This may not be applicable in every situation, but it does eliminate the enforcer’s attitude that “I have power over you and I can bring pain into your life! “ They will no longer have this power over the citizens and they too must negotiate workable compromises.  Any hard and fast rule must be followed by the justification for that rule and these rules must be ratified by the membership of the organization. “How can we live free in this Free Nation”? By learning/enacting assertive communications, negotiating workable compromises and enacting, not rules/laws, but guidelines.

By Jove, I think we’ve got it. We now know how to live free as members, in microcosms and as citizens, in a free nation.    Q.E. D.
